Revolution of Flies

Hi Ira, this is my project based on my life about a Venezuelan citizen and my first years living during the Venezuelan Revolution and crisis since 1998. Kinda like Persepolis or The arab of the future. Hope you like it and could give me advices on how to make it better.

Outline plot

Part I: Birth, Division, and the Shifting Ground (1998–2002)

1. Birth in the Election Year (1998)

  • Erik is born in 1998, the year Hugo Chávez won power. His chaotic early life is defined by constant moves between cheap hotels, a drug-dealing father, and a mother struggling with addiction.

2. The Great Abandonment (2002)

  • Amidst the intense 2002 coup attempt, Erik's father abandons the family. Moving in with his grandparents, Erik witnesses the stark, permanent political division of his family during the Coup d'État Dinner.

3. The National Show (1998–2002)

  • Chávez's lengthy, televised speeches constantly disrupt regular life, leading Erik to make secret trips to the cybercafe for video games, his first small act of rebellion against state dominance.

Part II: The Noise, The Faith, and The Propaganda (2003–2010)

4. Propaganda and Petty Rebellion

  • The city is saturated with "Eyes of Chávez" propaganda, which Erik and his friends subvert through petty, irreverent acts. He confronts economic and social inequality firsthand when visiting a friend in a barrio.

5. The Sound of Violence

  • Daily life is dictated by the constant threat of crime and gunfire, leading Erik to adopt survival strategies, like carrying two phones. The first major shortages of basic goods, like milk and flour, signal the irreversible start of the economic collapse.

6. The Cemetery and Lost Faith

  • Witnessing the class segregation in death (rich vs. poor cemeteries) and the influence of Santería rituals triggers a major crisis of faith in Erik, leading to angry conflict with his family.

Part III: The Final Disillusionment (2013)

7. The Silent Relief (2013)

  • Hugo Chávez dies, and Nicolás Maduro assumes the presidency. Erik and his family experience a silent, cautious pause of hope and relief, recognizing the moment's significance without public celebration.

8. The Father's Arrest (Post-2013)

  • After years of absence, Erik's father attempts to return to Caracas from England but is immediately arrested at the airport for illegally exchanging money. This final, political betrayal shatters Erik's last illusions about his father and the failing system.
