Real Life Pagne — Exploring Cinematic Storytelling with Sora

Real Life Pagne — Exploring Cinematic Storytelling with Sora - student project

Hi! Thank you so much for this class (mainly for the prompt engineering guide!)

For this project, I wanted to explore Sora not as a visual experiment, but as a storytelling tool.

I started from a concept that matters to me: the pagne (an african wax print fabric) as part of everyday life, not as a decorative object, but as something that carries, supports, and connects people, especially through maternal gestures.

When generating the clips with Sora, I wasn’t looking for “perfect” shots.
I focused instead on natural movement, repetition, and small human imperfections. I discarded several clips that felt too rigid or artificial and kept only the ones that felt believable.

The edit was built slowly!
I paid a lot of attention to pacing and rhythm, allowing gestures to repeat and breathe instead of cutting too fast.

Sound played an important role in shaping the story.
In the first part, I used an instrumental track to support the flow. Halfway through, the music fades out and leaves space for market ambience, voices, and the sound of a baby crying. The reel ends with a spontaneous laugh, bringing the piece fully back into real, human presence.

This project helped me understand how AI can be directed with intention, with a director's perspective attitude!
It also pushed me to trust my instincts as an editor and focus more on observation than explanation.
