Here's my hand coated watercolor paper with a pine branch. The watercolor paper I used was just what I had in the house- nothing fancy. Higher quality paper would make it easier to rinse without fear of tearing, but if you're gentle enough in that step you can use cheaper paper as you are just starting out exploring the medium.
