Perpetual Plant Journal en Plein Air

My color mix reference sheets helped me to pick out the mini tin to use this morning to paint this week's entry into my Perpetual Plant Journal. I sat sketching and painting, surrounded by my Iris and Celandine that I had painted onto the double-spread in previous years. In choosing my palette, I wanted to make sure I could achieve a pink that I would like on the page with the yellows and violets. Without my color charts, I wouldn't have known that I could obtain the results I wanted with the tin I chose.
though I could have used the sketchbook with the original color-mix grid, I chose to use my tiny reference sheets instead so that I could share with you one of the ways I use my travel kit. I'm always visiting botanic gardens when I travel.
I opted to paint the paler shades of the Thunbergia blossoms because I wanted the contrast of the light value of the petals to the intense, rich dark of the centers.

After I added the text, I realized I had misspelled Thunbergia. I may ... or may not ... correct that with a touch of white gouache.

I look forward to seeing how you are using your expanded watercolor travel kits! Please post photos of your kits, your charts and the ways that you use them. Happy color mixing!
