Patient Education Plan: Managing Asthma with Inhaler Therapy

Patient Education Plan: Managing Asthma with Inhaler Therapy - student project

For this project, I created a patient education resource focused on helping individuals better understand and manage asthma using inhaler medications. The goal is to improve patient outcomes by increasing knowledge, confidence, and proper medication use.

The target audience is adult patients recently diagnosed with asthma or those who struggle with inhaler adherence. Many patients misuse inhalers or do not fully understand the difference between rescue and maintenance medications, which can lead to poor symptom control.

This education plan focuses on:

  • Explaining the difference between rescue inhalers and maintenance inhalers
  • Demonstrating proper inhaler technique
  • Teaching when and how often to use each medication
  • Identifying triggers and prevention strategies

To support different learning styles, the education would include:

  • Verbal instruction (simple explanations using non-medical language)
  • Demonstration and return demonstration of inhaler use
  • Visual aids such as diagrams or step-by-step guides

Patient understanding would be evaluated using the teach-back method, where the patient explains or demonstrates the steps to ensure comprehension.

This project highlights the importance of clear communication and patient-centered education in improving adherence and overall respiratory health outcomes.
