Painting with Thread -- a Terrier

I was so inspired byFloor's class! The steps were so clear and precise. I am just at the beginning of my pet portrait but I hope to be able to post updates on my project as I progress.

I'm finding 3 rookie mistakes I've made:
First mistake: I should have started with a smaller image. My hoop is about 9 inches in diameter. I felt that a larger image would help me capture the detail in the terrier's features. It has, but now I'm finding I have so much stitching to do! I am putting down loosely spaced stitches so I'll have an idea of the ground I have to cover with a particular color.
Second mistake: working with a dark background. I was unable to trace from my original image so I had to draw it on the my blue cloth with a white chalk pencil. I have to redraw the lines every few days since it rubs off when I handle the hoop.
Third mistake: I should have picked a subject with more contrasting colors and tones. I'm getting caught up in trying to make smooth transitions and I'm second-guessing if I'm putting down the correct color.
Despite the blunders, I'm still having fun stitching and am enjoying watching this terrier slowly take shape.
