Painted Collages

Third Artwork:

I created this third piece during the work time of my in person version of this class. I wanted to lean into Smith's techniques for drawing imagery that was meaningful to her and her background. I started by drawing on a piece of brown paper grocery bag with oil pastels and paint pen. I used various colors of acryilc paint to treat the background over the patches of oil pastel. I worked more in a dry brush technique as I layered materials, hiding some things, then bringing them back out with paint pen.

I drew the upper peninsula of Michigan where I was born and grew up, creating a radiating target coming out from my hometown. I added trees because that's one of the things I love about Michigan, especially up there. I grew up skiing with my family so I created a stylized skiing figure. I love that it feels like a sunset, something we have a lot of in this part of the world over the Great Lakes as well as the white giving the feeling of our winters. And because it's a stylized landscape of sorts, the paint effects now remind me of the northern lights.

Second artwork:

Here's a painted collage where I used magazine images to add texture and imagery to my paper, then I painted over it and worked back in with colored pencil. You can't tell in the photo but I used metallic paint which felt like a fun contemporary play on some of the color schemes that Jaune Quick-to-See Smith used in her artworks. I love the texture created by the brushstrokes and the play of lights and darks that peek through from the collage images.

Original Project:

I am feeling so inspired after diving into Jaune Quick-to-See Smith's art journey. Here's my first piece using newspaper, acrylic paint, Sharpie, and colored pencil. I love that further I worked on it the more it became a merge of my inspiration from Smith wiith my own art aesthetic.
