My dream team
1 the grapes of wrath
i loved the complexity and fragility of life, the compassion in the face of greed, the hope in the midst of overwhelming dispair
2. Midnights children
i loved the lyrical language and the humour built into the play of the language. The story line built around connecting moments in time with the protagonist. How those incredible connection points propel the reader through the story.
3. victory lap by George Saunders
I love the way he takes average, nondescript faulty outsiders and makes them so relatable and funny without any condescention. They become loveable, or at least you feel compassionate. And his use of language and pace, trips a long at a fun and engaging pace. He also makes unexpected things funny, and sheds a warm light over kids in overcontrolled positions without making judgement on it. He just lays it down without comment. Which makes you think.
