Hi Bresee. This is such a beautiful and thoughtful class project. I really love the soft, painterly atmosphere you created here. What stands out right away is how well you kept the barn as the focal point. The simple structure, warm roof tones, and the darker trees behind it help anchor the composition beautifully. Your sky also feels very calm and supportive, which keeps the eye resting naturally on the barn and the lovely field below. I especially love your middle-ground field treatment. The warm golden tones feel so harmonious against the kraft paper, and the way you kept this area simple really shows a good understanding of the lesson on big shapes and tonal grouping. Your foreground flowers and grasses also have lovely movement. The loose strokes give the painting life, and the pops of yellow flowers create a beautiful rhythm across the lower section. One gentle feedback I’d love to share is to avoid creating a very linear transition in the grass area, especially where the middle ground meets the foreground. Allowing some parts of the grass edge to rise and fall more irregularly can make the transition feel more natural, organic, and dynamic. This little variation helps the landscape feel more alive and less divided into separate bands. You can also try adding a few lighter highlights and darker accents in the foreground grasses to separate the flower clusters more clearly and create even stronger depth. Overall, this is such a lovely and expressive interpretation of the lesson, and I can really see your confidence in simplifying the scene. This was my first attempt at gouache. It was definitely a challenge getting used to this medium.
