Maintaining priorities

Scenario 1: Taking on extra work

Situation: When your manager asks you to take on an additional project, but you're already managing multiple deadlines.

My response would be yes, but "I would be happy to help with that project, but I want to make sure I am meeting my current deadlines first. Could we look at my current priorities together and decide what should be adjusted so I can give the the attention it deserves?"

Why i chose this approach is because I used a yes but approach because it shows I am willing to help but also set some boundaries. It encourages teamwork and prioritization instead of just refusing.

Scenario 2:

Situation: A coworker frequently asks you to complete parts of their tasks, which is starting to interfere with your own work.

Response i would use would be

“I’ve noticed I’ve been helping a lot with your tasks lately, and I want to support you, but I need to stay focused on my own responsibilities right now. I won’t be able to take this on, but I’m happy to show you how I usually handle it if that helps.”

Why I chose this approach thiis is a direct “no,” but still respectful. It sets a clear boundary while offering a small alternative so the relationship stays positive.
