you've done a much nicer job on the waterbath than I did! Lovely bleeds through the back of the bird and nice dry strokes on the tail feathers. You can get away with the chest (although I'd probably back off that first feather outline as to me if feels a bit too high)  - I think what is ever so slightly off is the shape of the head, it's a fraction too round, so more duck like. If you put your finger over the join between the beak and the start of the head you'll see that the join is to angular so the front is very rounded, if you make that angle a little less by adding a bit of black to fill in that sharpness and have it join the beak a little further along it should mostly fix it - if you print out a copy of your painting and fill it in on that to see rather than messing up your paper it should show you whether i'm right or just making it up!! You could also make the top of the beak slightly larger with a little bit of gouache, but to me it's that sharp angle that draws the eye.

Thank you so much, Nadine. That’s a very helpful tip. I printed out the photo as a template. Unfortunately, the printer cut off the top. I thought I’d just quickly draw in the missing part. I didn’t look closely enough. With birds, those details are what really matter. You’re absolutely right. Thanks, that’s a big help!!

I just had to paint this. It’s such a great subject.  I’m not 100% happy with my painting yet. I think I placed the white areas wrong somewhere, lost the light on the head, and the belly isn’t quite right either. I’ll have to give it another try.
