Learning to rest

Learning to rest - student project

This has been a really interesting project for me, because it made me realize that as I've co-opted a lot of my historical practices to rest and relax as part of my creative practice, they no longer really help me rest or relax. In between working, general life tasks, and creative things, I generally do not rest. So, this isn't so much a list of things I do, so much as it is a list of things I hope to do more of.

1. Reading (for pleasure)

I read as part of my work a lot (and one of my creative projects is writing), so I don't read for fun very often anymore, but I hope to set some time aside to read. Preferably, off of my phone.

2. Stretching

I have often found a few minutes of stretching to be helpful, especially after working on a project (may it be creative or not) as often projects involve a lot of time in one place/position. I hope to stretch more to help my joints too as I get older.

3. Spending time in nature (but without a goal of exercise)

Given some recent health diagnoses, I've had to really change the way I think about movement, and so while spending time outside was previously focused on getting the best exercise possible or going on a challenging hike (or often taking photos for projects!), I rarely spend time outside just to be outside. So I hope to take a moment to sit outside or walk along a beach or path with no motivation other than noticing nature and enjoying the sunlight, not focusing on doing it for a purpose with a specific end goal in mind.
