A paragraph of character description:

Joseph is a young man in his twenties that lives in an alternate version of Boston. One where the New England Puritans established a totalitarian theocratic America with steam punk characteristics. He is fully supportive and ingratiated into this system and culture at the beginning of the story, causing him to join the police and later secret police to serve it. This loyalty of his begins to falter somewhat over time as he sees the dreadful flaws of the system. Machiavellian scheming, executions for absurd reasons and atrocities committed against the populace. This leads him onto a journey of overcoming his previous pride in the system and imposed lack of self worth to facilitate a revolution to topple it.
