Japan Scarf

Inspired by my trips to Japan, primarily by nature and decorations. Seasons are an important part of the culture, as I experienced Spring and Autumn, I wanted to have some of both in it (through Sakura and Momiji leaves)

On my interest board, I saved many designs with a centric focal point, frames, and some disruptive symmetry within the composition.

These are the photos from my trips. I noticed that nature was an important source of beauty, and Japanese culture has showcased it in many elements, and their interventions in the landscape are very appealing to me as their result is very harmonious.

I started with sketches. These were the items more iconic to me, and also easier to draw (I tried the maneki neko but had to give up)

It is a big jump from the sketches (I wish I had documented the process of it..) but it took me several days to complete it. I used the color palette from the mood board. In the lamps, I wrote 観桜 / かんおう/ kanou, which means sakura viewing. My signature is the stamp I use for my calligraphy practice.

I tried just pink and red...

... and after playing with Procreate's gradient map, ended up with this color palette. This is the version ready for print.

Creating the mockup was very exciting! It was a great moment to confirm my design and send it to print.

I usually order from Contrado, but trying to be more sustainable I looked for places closer to me. I'm very pleased with the quality. I loved Ellie's comment on feeling domestic on skillshare (so trueee, I had to press it on every border to make it easier on the hem)

I used a silky pink thread and meditated for a couple of hours (on different days) while checking on my perfectionism to not freak out about the stitches that went out of track. Also, the corners were very difficult... I couldn't figure it out with the video so I improvised and some are not pretty...

I loved the final result!

Wearing it was also a learning curve (lol), but it looks so pretty and fun. I always wanted to wear a head wrap and now I have my own (Yay!).

Thanks, Ellie for another amazing class! I really enjoyed it every step of the way.
