Hi Julie, let's define mud as used to describe an overworked watercolor - which by the way is not what I would call your classically restrained watercolor. You have succeeded very well in applying your well 'shaded' color notes. I assume you used either paynes grey or a black to achieve the shading in your painting. By shade I mean deepening colors with black. This is not a muddy painting since it is not overworked. muddy paintings are a result of excessive subbing and over mixing and to be frank a lot of messing around with the brush and paint. Yours is a perfect example of a well balanced classically restrained painting. Classically restrained is in reference to the subtle balance of colors in art. Bright garish splashes of pure colors make for an eye catching modern eye candy but are hard on the eyes and soul after a few days of looking at them. A balance pf neutral, primary and secondary color notes is in the long run more intriguing to the viewer. Notice how your orange notes sing the loudest in your painting. then we see the pure green singing in harmony with the orange. Sky blue provides a perfect compliment to the orange and an adjacent to the green. The shades and neutrals make the whole color design effective. This is what I see ...clarity ...not mud!Now as to your technique and how you could notch it up a bit. Take a look at your bleed lines on the sky right side next to the tree branch. These could be eliminated by 'picking up the drips' with a dry brush before they set. In other place the bleed lines actually add to the effect as in the grass at the bottom. I would keep a softer edge on the top of the mountains and put the harder edge on the bottom of the mountain as you did in some places with the left mountain. The hazy part on the left side of the birch trunk is very effective and gives a misty mountain effect. So in conclusion I would encourage you to pay attention to hard and soft edges and forget about the mud. Now if you want to elevate the key of your picturs and make them more colorful and bouncy then syop using the earth tonr colors such as sienna, ochre, black etc and stick with the transparent colors.
