I used Windsor & Newton gold ink which doesn't show up particularly well until the light catches it but then it does give a nice gleam. 
The spikes were done using a cocktail stick and that along with the paper clip is a really handy tip which I'll use in future projects. 
I overdid the splashes and grasses but overall I'm pleased with my first attempt.
