I like the option at an angle more, because this way, you can still see the plate, and the finished illustration of the dish will look more interesting. The main thing is to try to find a place with good lighting. Plus for a photo, you can add some large elements on tops, such as lime slices, herbs, and small hot peppers. But this is optional. Now to the drawing process. My favorite technique for dishes like curries, salads, and so on is to show the bulk and then show part of the elements in detail in the foreground. There is no need to draw each rice individually. For example, you can draw more detailed chicken pieces, carrots, greens, and some rice. And the rest is shown simply with color. I'm wondering how to photograph/paint those soggy one pot dishes (think: curry). How would you present that for food illustration?
