I started by exploring these ideas:

 

I had fun with the last one, even tried drawing a funky  “tech-disco plant”:

But something was missing: THE LAB.

So I dug deeper.

Almost there. I took a break from jotting ideas on screen and doodled these.

 

So I started creating the illustration.

I was not sure whether to do it in vector or raster.

My main focus was to keep the rough, hand-drawn look.

In the end, I opted for vector art, making custom brushes from the sketchy marks. The final result:

Then, I came up with a quick sketch that sort of worked, but it didn't quite fit the article's message.

So, I went a different route, trying vector art at first but switching to raster for better results. Final result:
