Finding Happiness in Counselling: A Path I Never Expected

There’s something special about finding joy in a direction I never expected. That’s how studying counselling feels after coming from a commerce background. Commerce taught me structure, logic, and how to focus on results. Counselling, on the other hand, is opening up a new world. It’s about connecting with people, exploring emotions, and having conversations that matter to the heart, not just the numbers. The joy comes from seeing that I’m not leaving my past behind, but building on it. Commerce gave me discipline, organization, and a way to think analytically. Counselling brings something more personal: the chance to understand others, listen to their stories, and learn about myself. It’s a change from focusing on results to focusing on people, and that feels both refreshing and fulfilling. What makes it even better is the sense of alignment I feel, knowing I’m finally doing something that matches my values. Counselling allows me to be present, compassionate, and real. It gives me the chance to slow down, listen, and connect—things that often get lost in busy, results-focused settings. It’s rewarding to see that I can bring both worlds together: the structure and professionalism from commerce, and the empathy and insight from counselling. This is what makes the path feel meaningful, human, and true to who I’m becoming.
