Destroying to Create

Below are the before and after images of destroying a sketch. On the left is a failed sketch from my old sketchbook. While it's not necessarily the worst, I have revisited this character in a much more successful illustration. The main issue stemmed from the experiment with ink, which didn't work as I intended (but that's why we experiment!).

On the right, I have saved the lineart version (and will save it as a possible scrap or bookmark) and surrounded it with a collaged/chopped version of the remainder of the page. Essentially, I've destroyed something to create something new, a temporary collage.

In reflection, this experiment has reminded me that creating should be for myself and that even failures advance learning. Out of my failure I have created and reimagined, and this exercise has given me a new way to consider old projects, failed attempts, and even successes.
