Coffee Latte project

October 2015

Hi everybody!

This is my second lettering project while taking Mary Kate's course.

This time I tried to make the lettering in greek alphabet! I thought of making a lettering illustration of the coffee I drink, which is latte but in Greece they don't always understand when you say latte, so I have to "describe" my coffee like this: Fredo cappuccino latte sweet with extra milk and some cinammon on the top please...

You can see it in greek in the photos

So I did some brainstorming for the words and came up with one to do lettering warm up: "KAΠΟΥΤΣΙΝΟ"

I also made a mood board for the colors, font style, glass shapes, coffee beans etc

I started rough sketches. I wanted to make the lettering in a shape of the latte glass. The bubble says: "What whould you like?" (ΤΙ ΘΕΛΕΤΕ?)

I wanted coffee bean cartoon style characters.

I started making the pencil drawing in the final proportion, because it was difficult to fit the lettering in the shape, since I did not have the final shape yet.

I kept changing the style in the words because it seemed too busy. In the end, I had to decide on the final look.

I made the final pencil drawing, together with all the background little elements, the coffee beans, the bubble etc

Finally it is time for the inking which proved easier than I expected it to be

A few elements I scanned seperately like the banner's back ribbons. Then it was time for turning the arwork in vector and experimenting with color

This is the color alternative I prefer: Blue background and brown glass shape

Now is the time for textures. I needed an icy blue background with more depth, and more gradients for the coffee glass. Actually I added texture to almost everything in the end!

These are the handmade textures I created and I also used some ready ones I founf on the internet (see in my moodboard)

Finally after many, many, many layers of photoshop, this is the final piece with textures!!

I love how the blue background came out and also love the little ice cubes... I am quite happy so I will leave it as it is!

What do you think? Love to have your feedback!!!

Note: the first 14 likes and comments you see here are actually for this project: https://www.skillshare.com/classes/design/The-First-Steps-of-Hand-Lettering-Concept-to-Sketch-Lettering-I/389616295/projects/43182?saved=1 which was first featured here, but then decided to move to the other class of Mary Kate. Thanks!
