Cargohold of USAT Liberty, Bali

This is a realistic scene, I promise.

I took this class to help me improve my landscape drawing, which I hope will also help me develop my landscape painting. First I worked on the example image;

Cargohold of USAT Liberty, Bali - image 1 - student project

A few key points I took away were dividing up the page, starting in he centre of the drawing, where to place the darkest values to draw attention, and giving the viewer a pathway into the scene.
I also paid attention to my line work - in addition to incorporating a full range of values, I attempted to bring in a full range of textures, with the hard lines of the rocks and the rough edges of the pine trees.
Overall, I was pretty happy with the result, and I might return to this reference image with some grey-toned paper and white pencil for lighter tones.

To push my understanding of composition and perspective further, I drew the interior of the cargo hold of the USAT Liberty, where I was diving in Bali. The two challenges of this scene were that the horizon line of the landscape is slanted to the slide and that, due to being underwater, there are no hard edges. I sketched out the slanted perspective and used the small cylinder in the corner to show the angle of the actual sea floor, and limited myself to only using the overhand grip and layering up the darkest areas without ever bearing down on the pencil to ensure the ephemeral softness of the undersea landscape.
