Blueberry study

Blueberry study - student project

I’ve painted for years using various types of media but I have a very tight style.  When it comes to what inspires me or the work I’m drawn to and want to put on my walls, it’s always the loose, painterly artwork over precise, detailed pieces.

Dylan’s work is so inspiring and it was great to see how she looks at a reference picture and creates something loose, fresh and with such a great colour palette.

I wanted to follow along using a colour palette as similar as possible to the one Dylan used.  I didn’t have all the colours so I mixed my own and in doing so also created some colour swatches for future reference.

I’m quite pleased with how the final piece turned out but I can see areas that I would like to change but I had to be very strict with myself and wash my palette to stop me from adding more paint.

My plan going forward is to create some other pieces using a similar type of reference photo and then eventually moving onto landscapes, something I’ve always wanted to do but my tight style has never really worked for these in the way I want them to.

Once I’ve picked my next reference image I might initially try using the same colour palette as this one so it’s easier to compare and decide what’s worked and not worked but then move onto creating new colour palettes and building up the swatches.
