Beginner Guitar Learning Plan

Beginner Guitar Learning Plan - student project

Phase 1: Getting Comfortable with the Guitar (Day 1-3)

1. Learn the Parts of the Guitar

  • Headstock, tuning pegs, neck, fretboard, body, bridge, and strings (from thickest to thinnest: E, A, D, G, B, e).

2. Holding the Guitar & Proper Posture

  • If using a pick, hold it between your thumb and index finger.
  • Keep your wrist relaxed and your fingers curved when pressing strings.

3. Basic Finger Exercises for Strength & Dexterity

  • 1-2-3-4 Exercise: Place fingers on frets 1-2-3-4 (one per fret), moving up and down the neck.
  • Spider Walk: Helps improve finger independence.

Practice Goal – 15 mins of warm-up exercises before every session.

Phase 2: Learning Basic Chords (Day 4-10)

1. Start with Open Chords

  • C Major (C)
  • A Minor (Am)
  • G Major (G)
  • E Minor (Em)
  • D Major (D)

Tips for Smooth Chord Changes:

  • Keep fingers close to the frets but not on them.
  • Strum each string to check for buzzing/muted sounds.
  • Use common chord transitions (C → G → Am → F).

Practice Goal – 30 mins of switching between these chords smoothly.

Phase 3: Strumming Patterns & Rhythm (Day 11-20)

1. Learn the Downstroke (D) & Upstroke (U)

  • Start with simple Downstrokes (D-D-D-D) on any chord.
  • Introduce Down-Up (D-U-D-U) for smoother playing.

2. Basic Strumming Patterns to Learn

  • D-D-U-U-D-U (Common in pop & acoustic songs).
  • D-U-X-U-D-U (Muted strum for dynamic rhythm).

Practice Goal – Play with a metronome at a slow pace (60 BPM) and increase speed gradually.

Phase 4: Reading Tabs & Simple Melodies (Day 21-30)

1. Understanding Guitar Tabs

2. Learn Simple Melodies

  • "Happy Birthday"
  • "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"
  • "Smoke on the Water" (Riff)

Practice Goal – Play melodies with correct timing and finger placement.

Phase 5: Playing Full Songs (1-2 Months In)

Choose Beginner-Friendly Songs:

  • "Perfect" – Ed Sheeran (C, G, Am, F)
  • "Knocking on Heaven’s Door" – Bob Dylan (G, D, Am, C)
  • "Love Me Like You Do" – Ellie Goulding (Em, C, G, D)

Playing Tips:

  • Use chord charts to transition smoothly.
  • Play along with the song at a slower tempo, then match the original speed.
