Across the Bar
INT. BAR/ RESTAURANT DAY/ EVENING
The restaurant has a large bar that wraps around the middle
with the booths and tables surrounding.
2 people sitting at the bar together a male mid forties,
and a female mid forties. Just hanging out enjoying what's
left of their shared meal. They both still pick at the food
as they are finishing up.
GUY
So this was really good.
FRIEND
Yeah this place has great food.
GUY
I have never had Korean cauliflower
before, and these fries with the
aioli are awesome.
FRIEND
The aioli is house made, also the
wings flavor "blended" is a house
special.
GUY
Oh really, this was a good call, I
have to say.
FRIEND
I know all the good places.
The bartender sets the separate checks down in front of
them. They both reach for their cards to pay; set them
down.
The bartender after dealing with other customers, leisurely
comes over and takes them away.
FRIEND (cont'd)
So, did I tell you that I'm going to
Vegas next week?
GUY
No you didn't.
FRIEND
Yeah I'm going to see the Dead in
the sphere.
GUY
Oh wow in the sphere that's awesome,
I'm super jealous.
FRIEND
You should be!
GUY
I am. Vegas and the sphere. So,
are you going to Hell's Kitchen and
have the beef wellington?
FRIEND
No I had that in London.
GUY
Yeah but that's not Hell's Kitchen.
FRIEND
No but it's London baby!
GUY
OK fair enough!
As the bartender brings back their cards to both of them, the
bell on the door rings. The male turns to look, and is in
shock of who he sees. A tall slim woman dark hair mid-
forties.
GUY (cont'd)
(Voice over,
internal
monologue.)
What is she doing here? I can't help but feel a flood of
emotions as she's standing there in
front of me stunning as ever. I
remember the good times we had together they
seem like a lifetime ago and yet
still like yesterday. What are the
odds she's here?
A beat.
The dark haired woman doesn't notice him at first, and he's trying not to look at her.
FRIEND
Hey.
The friend hits the guy on the arm
FRIEND (cont'd)
Hey!
GUY
(V.O.)
I snap out of it and give my now
divided attention to my friend.
The friend looks at her phone.
FRIEND
Let's go I have to work tomorrow and
get up early.
The dark haired woman walks around the bar and sits
across from the 2. The guy takes a quick glance at her, then quickly looks away. Clearly his mind in on her though.
GUY
(V.O.)
She changed your hair added a tint
of red to it. It's fitting with her
dark brown hair. I like it she looks
great as always. I wonder if she's
meeting someone or not. She
does often go out alone, very
independent.
FRIEND
HEY!
Friend Hits guy on the arm again.
FRIEND (cont'd)
Let's go I have to get up early for
work tomorrow.
GUY
I'm going to stay for another drink.
Friend looks around the bar. She notices the dark haired
woman across the bar and hits the guy on the arm again.
FRIEND
Look at you being brave and staying
at the bar alone.
GUY
I know.
FRIEND
Well good luck!
The friend winks at the guy and gives him a hug.
FRIEND (cont'd)
Goodbye, this was fun text me later.
GUY
It was we should do it more often.
FRIEND
We should, I'm just so busy.
GUY
I know.
The friend grabs her purse and gives him a wave and walks
out of the restaurant.
GUY (cont'd)
(V.O.)
Now my attention is on her. I'm
trying not to look, but I can't help
myself. I wonder if she's happy. I
hope she is.
He reluctantly looks at her from across the bar they make
eye contact. She smiles and a little wave. He smiles and
awkwardly waves back.
GUY
(V.O.)
I wonder what she's thinking right
now. Is she happy to see me,
indifferent, or freaked out? I'm
sure she's freaked out. God I hope
not. With the emotions rushing
through my body, I'm at a loss for
words.
What should I do? Should I go talk
to her? No don't freak her out.
Remember you don't know who she is
anymore. In my mind I still see her
as the gorgeous women kneeling in
front of my mirror in my dinning
room fixing her hair as I watched;
then turning and kissing me. That
woman you would be a stupid goofball
just to make her endlessly laugh.
She's not that person anymore
remember that. That was a different
life. You don't know her now. You
don't know who she is anymore. You
should just leave, don't do anything
stupid just leave. Just leave. Just
leave! You had your time with her
and you blew it, so just move on.
The guy still sits at the bar almost frozen.
GUY
(V.O.)
Why are you still here? Stop being
stupid. Shes just going to reject
you. Don't embarrass yourself. Just
leave, just leave!
A beat.
GUY (cont'd)
(V.O.)
But, she's here and what are the
chances of that. Is it fate or the
universe telling you something.
Should I try? Of course you should
"Yolo" and you will hate yourself if
you don't.
They make eye contact.
GUY (cont'd)
(V.O.)
Do something goofy to make her
laugh.
He does the super cheesy wink and the gun gesture. She smiles.
GUY (cont'd)
(V.O.)
I hope she doesn't do that smile and
turn.
She does the smile and turn.
GUY (cont'd)
(V.O.)
Oh that smile makes me melt and feel
helpless.
What should I do? OH dummy BUY HER A
DRINK.
What was her favorite drink hmm-mm?
She like's IPA beer. No not a beer
something else. What was it I can't
remember,
A beat.
GUY (cont'd)
(V.O.)
Wait she likes Jose gold a double on
the rocks, and a vodka martini. But
which one should I get? Oh the last
time we hung out she got a martini
but didn't get the olives. yeah
that's it get her a martini and make
sure there's olives. Get 3 olives.
He calls the bartender over
BARTENDER
What's up boss?
GUY
Yeah can I get a vodka martini with
Tito's and 3 olives please make sure
there are 3 olives.
BARTENDER
You got it boss.
The bartender walks away.
They make eye contact again. He does something stupid to
make her laugh.
GUY
(V.O.)
That smile still gets me.
The bartender brings over the martini
BARTENDER
Here you go boss 3 olives.
GUY
Thanks.
A beat.
GUY (cont'd)
(V.O.)
Remember she likes to sit on the
right side.
They make eye contact again and the guy hold up 3 fingers
and mouths 3 olives to her. She laughs. The guy holds up
the drink toasts it to her and sets it down next to him on
his right side for her. The bell at the door rings. Smiling he looks back over at her.
Smiling she starts to get up.
