2D Proximity Reaction Animation

For this project, I created a proximity-based 2D animation in Adobe After Effects using expressions.
The scene is built around a simple idea:
when a control object (the white sphere) moves closer to the flowers, they react — opening up, changing visually, and creating a sense of depth and motion.
What’s happening in this animation:
-
Proximity-driven reactions using expressions
-
Flowers that open and close based on distance
-
Fake “shadow” and depth effects created entirely in 2D
-
Highlight and glow accents for a polished, premium look
-
Smooth, responsive motion without any 3D layers
This project is meant to show how powerful simple shapes + expressions can be when used creatively. The setup is easy to understand, easy to tweak, and highly reusable for your own ideas.
If you’re watching this class, I highly encourage you to post your own version — even if it’s simple. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s applying the concept and experimenting with proximity-based motion.
Looking forward to seeing what you create.
