Gouache is such a versatile medium. You can add water and use it like watercolor or use it alone for flat, bold, eye-catching colors. In this beginner workshop, you’ll learn paint mixing, explore the different qualities of gouache paint, learn layering techniques, and see how different brushes and brush strokes affect your mark making. Then you’ll try your hand at two different projects to create your own works of art. You’ll need a selection of gouache paints, brushes, and paper for this workshop. The first class is focused on acrylic gouache, specifically, but regular gouache will work, too.

Workshop Timeline

Milestone 1: First up, join illustrator Alanna Cartier in Acrylic Gouache Adventures: Getting Started. Alanna walks you through all of the beginner tips and tricks she wishes she had getting started, from how to control the ratio of water to paint to perfecting your brush control. Share your still life in the Project Gallery by December 7th.
Milestone 2: Next, join illustrator Kate Cook in Adventures in Gouache: Painting and Pattern Making Techniques. Kate builds on Alanna’s introduction, with lessons on the quality of paint pigments, painting a color guide, tips for effective layering, and fun with pattern-making. Share your pattern in the Project Gallery by December 21st.
