About This Workshop

This is the first workshop in a 5 part series. The series builds on each other, taking the student from concept to pattern, pattern to collection, and collection to portfolio. While students have opportunity to take the entire series, you are not required to.

During this session, you’ll learn everything you need to know about Adobe Illustrator, how to gather inspiration, sketch and illustrate. I’ll walk you through the essential steps in my class: Intro to Surface Pattern Design, where you’ll learn how to choose a theme, sketch with ease, scan with best practices, illustrate and make repeating patterns. At the end of this workshop, you’ll have 3 repeating patterns designed from your very own sketches. The perfect beginning to a complete pattern collection! If you’re ready to start making beautiful motifs and patterns, this workshop is for you!

Timeline

Phase 1 - Background + Fundamentals (Due Friday, January 27th)

Watch Lessons 1-11 (Intro Unit) from Intro to Surface Pattern Design
Familiarize yourself with Illustrator’s essential tools and set up your custom work space
Due: Introduce yourself on the community board

Phase 2 - Inspiration (Due Tuesday, January 31st)

Watch Lesson 12 (“Sketching & Inspiration”) from Intro to Surface Pattern Design
Read “Gathering Inspiration for a Pattern Collection” (to be posted during workshop)
Due: Submit an inspiration board, theme (i.e. spring gardening, camping in the mountains, etc) and 10 descriptive words that will support your pattern collection.

Phase 3 - Sketches (Due Saturday, February 4th)

Begin putting pen/pencil to paper.
Spend at least 15 minutes each day sketching out ideas.
Due: Submit a photo (or two) of your sketches. A collage or phone picture will work great for this!

Phase 4 - Sketches to Illustrations (Due Thursday, January 8th)

Watch Lessons 12-17 (Illustrating from Sketches Units) from Intro to Surface Pattern Design
Due: Submit 15 - 20 illustrated motifs from your sketches. You will use these to create your 3 patterns.

Phase 5 - Final Patterns (Due Tuesday, January 14th)

Watch Lessons 21-26 (Repeat patterns & next steps) from Intro to Surface Pattern Design

Due: Submit 3 repeating patterns created from your illustrated motifs.
