About This Workshop

This is the second workshop in a 5 part series. The series builds on each other, taking the student from concept to pattern, pattern to collection, and collection to portfolio. While students have opportunity to take the entire series, you are not required to.

During this session, you’ll learn everything you need to know to start creating motifs from photographs and watercolor paintings. I’ll walk you through the essential steps in my classes: Intro to Surface Pattern Design and Watercolor for Surface Pattern Design. You’ll first learn how to photograph a subject for your patterns, scan them in and begin to illustrate motifs from the photos you take. Next, you’ll learn how to incorporate painted elements into your designs, whether their simple strokes or detailed florals.

At the end of this workshop, you’ll have 4 repeating patterns designed from your very own photos and paintings. The perfect next step to a complete pattern collection!

Timeline

Phase 1 - Background + Fundamentals (Due Friday, February 24th)

Refresh: watch Lessons 1-11 (Intro Unit) from Intro to Surface Pattern Design
Familiarize yourself with Illustrator’s essential tools and set up your custom work space
Purchase any necessary supplies for painting (will be outlined during the workshop)
Due: Introduce yourself on the community board

Phase 2 - Gather Inspiration (Due Monday, February 27th)

Watch lesson 12 (“Sketching & Inspiration”) from Intro to Surface Pattern Design
Read “Gathering Inspiration for a Pattern Collection” (will be posted during workshop)
Spend time photographing the subject or theme of your choice (i.e. flowers, horses, fruit, etc).
Due: Submit 10-15 Photos you’ve taken that you would like to Illustrate from (a collage would work best for this).

Phase 3 - Illustrations from Photographs (Due Thursday, March 2nd)

Watch Lesson 18 from Intro to Surface Pattern Design
Illustrate several motifs from the photographs you’ve taken, as outlined in class.
Due: Submit 5-10 finished motifs from the photos you’ve taken.

Phase 4 - Begin to Paint (Due Monday, March 6th)

Watch Lessons 1-4 from Watercolor for Surface Pattern Design.
Spend time painting this week, working on simple motifs, as outlined in class.
Due: Submit a photo (or two) of your paintings.

Phase 5 - Illustrate from Watercolors (Due Friday, March 10th)

Watch Lessons 5-9 from Watercolor for Surface Pattern Design.
Scan, vectorize, color and begin to layer your motifs.
Due: Submit 5-10 vectorized motifs from your paintings.

Phase 6 - Final Patterns (Due Tuesday, March 14th)

Watch Lessons 10-11 from Watercolor for Surface Pattern Design
Refresh: watch lessons 21-25 from Intro to Surface Pattern Design to refresh your pattern building skills.
Begin to develop patterns by using the motifs you’ve created from both photographs and watercolor paintings.
Due: Submit 4 repeating patterns: 2 from the photograph motifs and 2 from the watercolor motifs
