In this new workshop, professional graphic novelist Ira Marcks teaches you to create stunning world-building artwork for the development of any creative storytelling project. Whether you’re a visual artist, comics author, game designer, or animator, you’ll learn how to draw narrative art that conveys the unique features of an imaginary world and its inhabitants. By the end, you'll have your own full-color fantasy illustration! Basic drawing skills are helpful for this workshop, but beginner artists and storytellers will also benefit from the fundamentals taught here.

Workshop Timeline

Milestone 1: First up, join Ira in Concept Art: Drawing Imaginary Worlds with Ira Marcks. Ira breaks down worldbuilding elements like culture and technology, and walks you through the basics of planning and executing detailed concept art. You’ll learn how to find inspiration, gather references, plan composition, and flesh out your art with linework and color. Share your new concept art in the Project Gallery by October 4th.
Milestone 2: Next up, in Drawing Other Worlds: An Introduction to Fantasy Illustration, Ira delves deeper into the fundamentals of visual storytelling. You’ll get Ira’s proven illustration techniques, and use them to draw a character’s “moment of discovery” that showcases the new world you’ve created. Share your new fantasy illustration in the Project Gallery by October 18th.
