And as a story nerd, I love to talk about writing, too!
I’ve loved stories for as long as I can remember. As a boy, my grandma told me tales of her adventures growing up on the South Dakota prairie as I drifted off to sleep, or filled my head with faerie queens, questing knights, and everything in between. Those stories shaped the way I saw the world and helped me understand my place in it. Eventually, I realized that I wanted to spin stories that would be just as important for someone else someday.
Chasing that dream led me into a lifelong pursuit of the writer’s craft, both on my own and by learning from some of the most well-regarded professionals in their spheres through the Masters in Creative Writing program at Oxford University. Since then, I've published 9 fiction books and am currently finish my fantasy fiction series, The Farshore Chronicles.
Writing is the most rewarding & fulfilling creative outlet I've ever experienced. It's also frustrating, exhausting, and overwhelming sometimes.
Quite the paradox, no? I've found that most of the really valuable things in life are dual-sided like that. Things like exercise, marriage, parenting, & pursuing your dreams are some of the most difficult & most wonderful things you can invest your time into, & I personally add writing stories to that list.
I want to help people write their books, because I truly believe that stories are some of the most powerful things in the universe.
And after writing hundreds and hundreds of thousands of words, I've realized that the "how" to write great stories doesn't have to be a mystery. A lot of “great writing” really come down to core strategies and components that we can understand and upgrade.
So thanks for being a story nerd with me! I love making resources for writers because I think we are some of the most dedicated and interesting people out there.
