How to Simplify Complex Urban Scenes: Intermediate Urban Sketching Course

Main area to improve on would be to focus on observation, more specifically drawing what you SEE instead of what you THINK you see. When you draw from what you think you see, your brain will make these auto-adjustments that will affect perspective and accuracy. That's because you're drawing a symbol or memory of how something should look like.For this drawing exercise, I suggest you focus on drawing the general shape of the buildings. Focus on getting the lines at correct angles, get the proportion right (e.g. distance between buildings). Don't draw the details. Just draw the shapes of the buildings. If you get the shape (perspective) wrong at the start, all your details won't matter and that's why you don't draw the details. If you find it difficult to reproduce what you see on paper, turn the photo upside down, and draw again. When you're drawing this way, you're actually drawing what you see, not what you think you see because our brains don't know how buildings look upside down. Same techniques apply when drawing upside down, focus on getting the angles, proportion right.
