day 1-22, latest: Car and another car

I'm going to start adding these to the top instead.
Day 22: Part B - another Christmas Car

Day 22: Christmas Car

Times like these I wish real life had a symmetry tool.

This one I did in Procreate.

Day 20: Letter to Santa

I got to try out the quinacridone rose straight out of the tube for the candy cane.  Flat lays are nice and easy so I really liked that. I see now that I need to fix the shadow for the oranges....day 1-22, latest: Car and another car - image 5 - student project

Day 19: Nutcracker

Another fun one to draw. 4"x5" (10x13cm) mostly daniel smith watercolors.

Day 18: Hot wine

I'll try to come back to this one later.

Day 17: Candle

I think this one would be quite pretty in gouache. Doing the shadows and the pine needles was my favorite part.

Day 16: Bunny

I did this one in Procreate while I was watching tv with my husband.

And here is Day 16 Bunny in actual watercolor

This one is pretty tiny (4" or 100cm square) and it was fun to do it that small.  I got a new red that I like much better (quinacridone rose mixed with a tiny amount of azo yellow) so that made the hat really pop.

Day 15: Oranges and Cinnamon

I’ve never seen a star anise and it shows.

Day 14: Elf

Loved drawing this one and all the stripes ended up being pretty meditative. I resisted the urge to use the tiniest brush to do them. Turns out, it's actually easier to use a larger brush because you don't have to pick up paint as often.

Technical stuff: 12x14cm fabriano paper. Princeton Velvetouch #6 long round brush and daniel smith paints (still haven't found a good red) I ended up mixing quinacridone magenta with some light pyrrole red with varying levels of success.  I mixed the green using just a bunch of stuff. Can't remember what all went in there, now. Phthalo turquoise was the base, I think. I quite like the diluted moonglow as the "white".

Day 13: Cookies

I've had this bottle of drawing gum for a year and this is the first time I've used it. I can't stop thinking of the possibilities now! This project was an absolute joy to do. I find 5 pointed stars very difficult to draw even though I do them all the time when doing glass beads. This gave me some much needed practice.  I did them how I now do leaves - spine first. I draw the "spine" and then I use that as a guide for drawing the points of the star. So much easier!

DAY 12: Gifts

Fun but I am glad I don't have to count the brushstrokes. :) I used the Canson cotton paper again. Still don't like it.

DAY 11: Lantern

I must have drawn this about 3 times before it clicked. I really enjoyed painting it, though. I can't wait to get to the bunny so onward we go!

Day 10: Cardinal

Well, I don't know what it is about birds but I cannot seem to figure out what goes where.

Day 9: Wreath

Finished this one in 20 minutes! Woot! This is a fun and non-fussy painting. Might add some highlights with gouache when it's all dry. This time I used 100% cotton Canson paper. Not at all like Arches. I will use this paper with gouache paintings because it is very smooth but doesn't really work all that well with watercolor.

Day 8: Mittens!

So fun to paint this one. I actually used the arches paper for this and it really did help when doing the shading layer.

I skipped bells day because I was out of town but here is ...

Day 7: Frosty berries! This one was fun to do. Finally found a use for viridian green.

DAY 5: Snuggletime

This was not my favorite but done is better than perfect.

Day 4 - Snowman

Other than when my cat bumped my arm and gave him extra cheek, it went pretty well. Getting a bit faster.

Day 3 - ribbon - this was fun to imagine where the folds and shadows might be.

Day 2 - candied apple

I found this one a challenge! I haven’t worked with red a lot and getting different variations of red on red was quite an exercise. I learned that light pyrrole is too orange and quin magenta is too pink and alizarin crimson is just dull as dishwater. Guess who is going shopping. This gal! Yay!

Day 1: Ornament
Fun and quick! This was a great warm up. I haven't picked up my paintbrush in months so this was nice to accomplish in a free moment this morning.
