Just getting my head back into the illustration game. Made a list of idioms and the ones that stood out were:

1. Pushing the envelope - Could go literal with this, and have someone shoving an envelope on the street, or someone shoving more and more papers into an exhausted envelope

2. Make up your mind - Someone could be "making up" the space in their head. A bedroom.. karate chopping the pillows.. something like this

3. Couch Potatoes - Just thought it would be funny to have a bunch of different spuds chillin' in a living room.

Any thoughts which direction I should take this?

UPDATE:

I am fascinated by how fun it would be to draw a potato family. So I've started playing with the Couch Potato Idea.. And giving each character a personality. Still don't know how this will go.. or how the next phase will be but I'm just going to run with it. In retrospect, I wish I sketched more concepts on the idiom I wanted to go with.

Too many details in this drawing - making it hard to restrict the color palette. I've decided to rethink this, and make potatoes interact with typography instead. By reducing the number of elements in the drawing, I am finding it easier to play with color...

 

And with that, I'm spent! Not loving the final result, but lots of lessons learned! Key takeaways - sketch more! Simplify / work bigger! Get a mouse!
