pattern #6:   all-over

my final "winter comfort" pattern using the motifs from my original sketches.

two weeks ago, i didn't know what a blob brush was or how to go about adding color to an object.....much less put them all together to create a pattern!  bonnie's fabulous classes and easy teaching style gave me the confidence i needed to take the first step in pattern design.

i am SO grateful to you, bonnie, for your sweet, generous, creative spirit....thank you from the bottom of my heart!  xox

pattern #5:  lined

this is my loose interpretation of the challenge for a lined pattern, and i'm submitting two different designs because these elements that i've included are really special to me.

my idea behind the first pattern is the childhood memory of mittens-on-a-string that was always tucked inside the sleeves of my winter coat, so i substituted the mittens for the heart-in-hand gloves in my sketches and put them in a vertical line.

the second pattern includes all of the words/labels from my sketches....because drawing letters is one of my very favorite things to do and i'm so excited that i was able to work them into a pattern!

pattern #4:  textured

for some reason, it took me an awfully long time to figure out how to add the texture to this little boot (and as per usual, it was user-error on my part!).  but once i did, i really enjoyed creating this pattern!

pattern #3:  layered

i used the dashed "steam" lines to create my background layer, and then added the tea cups, along with a bit of lettering, on top.  all of these patterns have been a huge challenge for me, but this one in particular was especially difficult as i struggled to keep groups together and different layers locked.  yikes!  i know we learn best through lots of repetition and practice, and i'm really grateful to be gaining all of this experience.....but i sure am glad this one's behind me!  :))

pattern #2: diagonal

my diagonal print featuring pine branches, hearts, and tiny snowflakes in three different

colorways.....because i just can't seem to stop playing with the recolor artwork buttons.  :))

pattern #1:  geometric

it has taken an entire day, along with a few color palette changes, but i have created my very first pattern!  (and i might have a few new gray hairs to go with it! :))

i used one of the snowflakes from my sketches, and then had a ton of fun using the recolor artwork feature.....best invention ever!   this is a sampling of the different colorways, along with changes in scale.

from sketch to vector

i'm completely new to the world of adobe illustrator, and i'm so thankful for bonnie's easy-to-understand lessons and wonderful teaching style to make the learning process go so much smoother!  i've really enjoyed vectorizing my images, and i'm excited to start creating my very first pattern!

some of my first sketches

here's a page from my sketchbook as i get started in this process.   i'm trying to keep in mind that it's probably better to "keep it simple" where the initial designs are concerned.....which kinda makes my detail-oriented side a little nervous!
