3 Watercolor Secrets: Create Your Best Watercolor Yet

You have a strong and well balanced sense of contrast in both watercolours. You have also achieved the well placed darks that make a watercolor have some drama.  Darks can be muddy and yours are not. As the class advises place those darks and then watch. As soon as you mess around with the darker paint it surely will turn to mud. The top part of the birch is finely rendered and has the sheen that makes the bark so attractive. We call this a lighting effect in painting. This is what we achieve when it is not about painting a tree but painting the light on the tree. Lighting is what landscape is all about.  I can see the light hitting the rock next to the birch. I can see the shadow from the birch. I can feel the warm light on the rocks in the companion painting on the left. I can feel the airy quality of the well painted sky in both paintings. These are the qualities to be aware of when creating. You have them and you must keep them in front of you as you paint.  Keep you landscapes bathed in light not paint. This is the greatest secret of all. I am very proud of you!       /Ron
