Watercolor portrait

I started off with a reference from Pexels and was going to include the flowers. Chickened out of that. I wanted vibrancy, so I used colors more or less straight, not much mixing except on the painting. Permanent rose, cobalt blue and transparent yellow. 11x14
I need to learn to "let loose" for a better background and any other tips would be appreciated. Including reference and first wash photo. I have some "Creative Sharpie Markers" I wanted to try, so all pressure was off after the lesson, so I tried to get funky with flowers. Really love those markers. The lighter colors even write over dark! Also included is a small 5x7 sketch i worked to death using a big clutch pencil.
