Watercolor Without Fear: Painting for Pattern Design

Watercolor Without Fear: Painting for Pattern Design - student project

Hi everyone, here are a few examples of what you can do with this method of painting for pattern design.

This design is called "Hibiscus Hummingbirds". I made it with fabric in mind... like this...

The next design is called "Love, Watercolor" - it was a lot of fun to paint, just enjoying the qualities of watercolor paint. If you're feeling nervous, you can try something like this!

I then mocked it up for fashion fabric, like this:

The next one is something I've only just finished painting. I was exploring new motifs and a different color palette. It's not a perfect painting and that's why I'm including it... because I don't want you to feel intimidated by this method. You can use it to explore and to play, and if it doesn't end up quite how you want it to, that's okay. I plan to edit it a little in photoshop and see how it looks as a pattern.

You can see, below, the different ways it fits together:

And another way:

I hope these images inspire you to have a go at the project and not to be too worried about the outcome. Just paint a few splashes and blobs if you like! The main thing is to have fun and learn the method. In my follow-up class I'll show you how to join the panels together in Photoshop, to make your pattern tile.

I can't wait to see what you create!
