Drawing in Adobe Illustrator: How to Retain the Artist's Hand

Hi Donna, I think that's happening because your brush isn't round. Right now it's acting like a calligraphy pen where the upstrokes are thin and the down strokes are thick. To change it, go to the brushes palette, double-click on the brush you used and set ROUNDNESS at 100%. See if that solves the problem.

Thanks Kris. I didn't use the round brush because I did want the variation the angled brush gives. It seemed like the sudden changes occurred when I joined the ends. Although, instead of the effect occurring at the joined place, it occurred at a random place. This class is very well done. I'll be using those brush settings quite a bit. Thank you.

On another note, I've taken several of your classes and appreciate how thorough you are.

Aah! I think you answered your own question. The brush tool can do some unexpected things when it's used to make closed shapes. You might remember that I said in the class that we'd be using the pencil tool for shapes and the brush for lines. That's one of the reasons.

I think your veggie drawings are off to a great start! Now I encourage you to push yourself a little further. Your lines are definitely more interesting now, but I'd love to see you experiment some more, like going beyond having outlines around everything.

Great class, Kris. I have a dilemma. My brush strokes seem to go suddenly from thick to thin. Is there a setting I am missing?
