Tony, this was genuinely interesting. I didn’t even know this type of bird existed, and that’s a good sign — it feels fresh. The animations are clean, easy to follow, and relaxed. It’s long, but it doesn’t feel long, which means your pacing and storytelling are working. Well done. Now the hard truth: at this point, opinions don’t matter — analytics do. Retention and drop-off will tell you exactly what’s strong and what’s weak.  Check the YT analytics. Go to the video → analytics → Engagement (at top). Look at swipe rate and audience retention.  It depends on the length of the video but: Strive for 80% swipe rate and 100% watch time. How was it for you? Sustainable long term? Overall: strong concept, solid execution. Ship more, study the data, then optimize. That’s the only way this scales. Great job — keep going!

First, switch from Overview → Engagement. Check your swipe/stayed-to-watch rate. That's half of the success with shorts. If people swipe instantly, nothing else matters.
 
Second, hover over the retention chart guide (the little “Chart guide” button). It explains exactly what the lines mean so you’re not guessing. Use it to understand where viewers drop off.
 
Your graph shows a gradual decline. Viewers slowly lose interest.
 
So it needs more energy. Faster pacing, more visual changes, pattern interrupts, movement every few seconds.

This is the right tab.
 
First, average view duration = 0:39 on a 1:00 Short.
That’s 65% retention (39 ÷ 60).
65% is solid.
But it’s not “viral” yet.
For Shorts to really explode, you want 80–100%+ (people rewatching).
 
Next, Stayed to watch = 41%
That means more than half swipe away instantly.
 
This is not an editing problem — it’s mostly a hook + idea problem.
 
If people don’t stop in the first 2 seconds, nothing else matters.
 
So priority order:

Hook stronger (first frame must punch harder)

Stronger / more novel ideas

Then polish: pacing, SFX, transitions, visuals

 
Polish won’t fix a weak hook. Ever.
 
Also important: if this is posted on a mixed-topic channel, YouTube is testing it on random viewers → higher swipe rate. A focused niche channel usually improves this a lot because the audience is pre-qualified.
 
Last thing — sustainability.
These animations take time. If you can’t see yourself making this style for the next year, don’t force it. If you enjoy it, double down and iterate.
 
Overall: good numbers, strong base. Now it’s just tightening the hook and idea quality.
