Story beginning:

My mother has told me the legend of the mirrors, the alternate reality that lies behind. But it seems to fantastic to be true. I woke up late this morning, I dreamed the story she’s told me multiple times. Falling through a dark space and being captured by the evil queen Velda. Forced to join her army or die only to be eaten by a huge, green dragon and waking up in a cold sweat in her own bed, in our world. My mother has hated mirrors ever since and I get why. That’s terrifying for a 6 year old but I’m older. That dream shouldn’t scare me so much now… yet here we are.

I have bigger issues right now. I’m going to be late for school.

I rush through getting dressed and go to fix my hair when I see it. Or, don’t I guess. My reflection is gone. Maybe the stories are true, this is always how it starts… I don’t have time to worry about that right now though. I brush my hair and braid it to the side, hopefully that’s good enough.

I bike as fast as I can to make it on time and I still have to rush to my first class. A couple of the students look at me as I rush in. From her look I can tell Megan is going to tease me about this later. I just gave her more ammo. I sigh and sit next to my best friend.

“Hey Lindsey”, I whisper.

“What happened to you Robin? You’re late and you look terrible!” She replies.

“My reflection was gone this morning, I didn’t have much of a choice.”

She looked shocked but didn’t say anything else.

The day drags on and surprisingly I’ve managed to avoid Megan. I run to the bathroom between classes hoping that my reflection is back. I keep my eyes on the ground until I’m fully facing a mirror, take a deep breath, look up and see… Megan. I whirl around and she gives me a sinister smile.

“Well, well, look who’s come to play. It’s a wonder you showed up at all today with as late as you were. I’d have stayed home.”

One of her sidekicks gives an obligatory giggle and then lets out a dramatic gasp while pointing at the mirror.

“Megan! Her reflection! It’s just as visible as she should be!”

I try to push past them and leave but Megan grabs my shoulder.

“Where do you think you’re going? Don’t you think you should at least try and find your reflection?”

She gives me a hard shove towards the mirror and I throw up my hand to catch myself as the mirror gets closer. I see my hand sink through the mirror and everything goes black.

I wake up on wet grass. I look up and there seems to be a door above me. Megan is looking through it and she seems worried for once.

I don’t have time to ponder long because a woman comes running out of the woods towards me. She hesitates as she gets closer to me and calls, “Who are you?”

“I’m Robin, who are you?” I call back.

She looks relieved and hurries over.

“You must be new. I’m Aubrey. But most people here call me ‘the queen’ we have to get to those woods before Snow finds me. Or you. She’s afraid the newcomers will try to take over her throne.”

My head is spinning as I follow Audrey. Snow as in Snow White. That’s impossible. That’s just a fairytale. What kind of place is this?

We get to the woods and hide in a hollow tree. Moments later a woman on horseback rides by slowly. Her hair is wild and her eyes look murderous. She draws a knife out of her belt and scans the forest. She looks just like how my mother described Queen Velda. As the woman disappears into the forest Aubrey breathes a sigh of relief and whispers,

“This must be very confusing for you. I know it was when I first got here. All the fairytales you’ve heard, and some that are long forgotten continue here. Just differently than they were told. When someone comes through the mirror they become a character. Some are good, some are bad. It’s not based on the story you know though, It’s the persons choice. I’m supposed to be the evil Queen. I got here after Snow White and she was already on the throne. I have no interest in taking that from her, I just want to live in peace. Be careful who you trust, they may not be what they seem.”

“How do I go back?”, I ask, “Do I just need to wake up?”

“Oh dear… you can’t go back. Once you come on this side of the mirror, you’re here for the rest of your life. You just have to make the best of it. There are others who need me, I’ll try to draw Snow away from you. Stay away from her guards. If they catch you, they kill you. I know there are some people who would try and help you but I’m not sure how many of them are still around. Good luck.”

She steps out of our hiding place, looks both ways, and then turns back to me. She looks me up and down slowly and says, “By the way, if I had to guess which character you were, I’d say there’s a dragon looking for you. If that’s the case, you need to find him. He can help.

Then she sprints away and leaves me to start panicking.

There’s a dragon looking for me? And I’m supposed to go find him?!? That woman is crazy! I can assure you, that’s not happening. I just need to find a way home before something bad happens. My mother didn’t have a dream, this is real!

I step out of the tree and start to head back to the door I seem to have entered through. I have to get out of here. As I near the edge of the forest I hear a horse charging up behind me. I dive to the side but it’s too late, Snow saw me. She yells at me to stop and guards seem to materialize from nowhere to join the chase. I’m running along the treeline trying to put some distance between us so I can hide when I hear a screech from the sky. Snow White and her entourage begin yelling and start to fall back so I risk a glance over my shoulder and see a big, green dragon closing in.
