Sketching from trip through town

Thanks, Drew, for a very helpful class! I learned a lot and was motivated to try this new style out in public right away (even though I was sick and my sketch locations were around going to urgent care and getting medicine).

I made 4 observations for myself and came up with a couple questions; maybe you have time to answer them:

  • Drawing quickly has me make more perspective mistakes (but I think that'll get better with just more practice).
  • I also have to practice better shading (hatching). Maybe you could do another follow-along class where learners sketch along and copy your perspectives and hatching.
  • I have a hard time finding shapes that I can group into a big shape. I guess it has to do with making the decision WHAT to sketch. Often my objects are separate from each other and including more background just to have a big shape seems inappropriate. What do you think?
  • On location (vs from a photo), I find it difficult to choose what will fit into the frame, especially objects that are close to me or far on either side. Where do I start, where stop?
