Ruling Pen: Explore Adding this Mark Making Tool to our Art Practice

Hi Denise I've been binging your classes and absolutely LOVE them. Your presentation is delightful and I love your expressions when you stumble upon something you really like.   Your photography in the classes is beautiful!  Actually, that's what attracted me to your classes. I've been painting on and off for years, but never abstracts. Now i'm very excited to start painting abstracts.  I've taken a lot of online courses and your classes are the best.  I actually dreamt  about painting abstracts last night.   Thank you for doing such wonderful classes. That little moment of discovery is one of my favorite parts of the process, so I’m thrilled you’re connecting with that too.
And I love that it was the photography that drew you in—my creative journey started with photography, so that feels like such a full-circle moment.

Hi Denise, I love your way of presenting materials and tools. I was drawn into this class by the the ruling pen. I also have a drafting background and did not use a ruling pen for drafting. I did however use ruling pens in college when studying Design Arts. We used the ruling pens with a ruler to create straight lines when colour blocking or with large hand painted text. We used gouache and the trick was to load the pen on the curved surface with a brush. Use a ruler with a backing surface such as cork so the paint doesn't bleed under the ruler. A couple rows of masking tape on the underside to the ruler works as well. You may also be interested to know that the ruling pen I used was part of a Mars Staedtler compass set. The ruling pen nib could be mounted to the compass. Just think of those large circles.

Wow! Super cool. Love those tips. And it is a testament to how easy we have things today with computers compared to the very labor-intensive way they did things years ago! I'm glad I live now... and can use these tools for play instead of depending on them and spending hours and hours bent over my drafting board! :)

I loved using the ruling pen for my mark-making!! New favorite art tool :)
