Room for creativity and relaxing

Room for creativity and relaxing - student project

Dear Ana,

after your visit with us, I thought a lot about the layout and design of the rooms. The original plan was to use the larger room for home office and creativity - since at that time I thought about making a creative business - and the other for sleeping. But live happens... and I was offered an advisory job in home-office, that I clearly jumped on to. And I think it's better so, because I love doing this and so creativity can stay a part of my leisure time and a hobby to relax.

So I had to think everything over. Since I noticed, that I can't sleep well in the little room but that it works really well for work, I decides to make a new plan for the larger room. So here I am  .

The bigger room should now become a comfort zone. A space for my hobbies (reading, painting etc.) and also for resting, relaxing and sleeping. I think it's more consistent that way. Now I have tried to design the room and incorporate your input. I would appreciate if you could take a look.

I placed the project here, because I took a lot of input from your new class. But it also incorporates ideas from all you other classes like hygge, the picture wall, and space for creativity. I still love all of your classes ♥.

 This is the room plan.

And that's how I would plan it.

In the left part is the "hobby room". There's plenty of room here to get creative.

Deep Besta cupboards (oak body, white doors) are placed at the top, with Skadis boards underneath on the wall to store pens, scissors and other handicraft materials. The worktop will be made of oiled oak with a visible tree edge to the front (to bring in nature). Even if this is perhaps not the most practical thing to paint on, I still chose it because of the feel. I notice that a good feeling when touching the table is very important to me. I would have placed 3 large Alex roll containers under the tabletop. I can then move them around depending on where I want to work at the moment. Here I'm still considering whether I should go for dark brown (to mirror the bed and also bring something dark in here) or oak (because it looks lighter and friendlier). White would be too sterile for me. The countertop would probably suit the darker color, although personally I would prefer to stick with light-colored furniture. I would be really grateful for input. One other problem, that showed up, is that the wall is only 358cm. But I would need 360 to place the Besta from one side to the other. There are different options how to solve this problem.

So my questions for this side are:

  • Lower Alex containers in dark brown or light oak?
  • What do I do with the missing space in the Besta boxes?
    - Simply place the boxes in the middle and leave them empty
    - Place boxes in the middle and shelves on the left and right (white or maybe oak with a wane?)
    - trying to split a box and place it left and right so everything is centered?
    - Cut off a few cm from a box?
  • any other input?

My bed will be on the opposite side. In the evening to sleep in, for the day I ordered a throw to make it look like a sofa. So the flowers are for pillows and the other fabric is for the throw and a back to lean on.

I chose dark brown for the wood of the bed here because I thought that with the fabric it would look like a sofa and be cosy.

There is a chest made of woven material at the end of the bed so that you can simply put away the bedding that is not required.

As you suggested, the wall is intended for pictures. However, I have a space problem and it is too much for me if the whole wall is decorated with pictures. That's why I've now planned another Besta cupboard above the bed - based on the other room. That creates a niche, which I always find very cozy. I would have kept the boxes as on the opposite side with oak outside and white doors now so that they don't overrule everything. In front of the bed, there will be a carpet (I chose one from Tisca with a lot of structure an different shades of grey and brown) with a couch table on it (as the pictures show). The couch table is the same material as the countertop on the other side.

My questions about this side:

  • Is it okay to go for the cupboards over the bed? Which color is best?

I also added a reading area. Here is a Kallax shelf for the books between the windows and nearby, I have to look where exactly, a hanging chair. I love swinging to relax. It's also a good alternative to bed when I want to chill out. You also said that different ways of sitting and lying down would be good for creativity. You can also take a nap in it. And it breaks the straight lines of all the other furniture.

So these are my ideas and plans. I you could help me with my questions, I would be very grateful.

Greetings, Karin

P.S. The craftsmen are currently working in the living room, where we are already incorporating your ideas on how to make it more "hygge". When it's done I'll send you photos of it. I think it will become really hygge. We found a really great interior decorator (Innenraumausstatter) who helped us a lot to implement your ideas.

Hi Ana, I didn't have time to reply as we were so busy with the remodeling. But now I'll post you the results. The living room is in the "hygge" class because it fits the theme better.

And here is the result of my room, with which I am more than happy. It turned out so incredibly beautiful.

When you sent me your reply, we had just finished hanging up all the boxes over the bed and the desk and my husband refused to turn the room over again.

I originally planned it the way you drew it now. During your visit, however, you said that I should rather do the workplace on the left, because otherwise you would come into the room and it would look so messy.

Well, in retrospect I'm glad I saw your post too late, because I realized that it's really important for me to be able to see into the distance and feel width when I'm in bed... also to look into the expanse of the room. Otherwise I quickly feel cramped. And when I'm working, it doesn't bother me at all. So it's fine the way it is now.

I've also incorporated all of Hygge's advice.

That's why I had a real wood desk top with a waney edge made for the Ikea furniture. There is also a beautiful wooden table next to the bed. Then a carpet made of wool and of course baskets. Instead of the steel holders for the pens that I had before, I now have small jute bags hanging up. And the hanging chair completes the coziness.

I can now do whatever I want in the room. I have a huge workspace with enough drawers to hold all of my pens, papers, and craft supplies. I have a pegboard for pens, scissors, etc. The worktop feels great.

My desk chair is also great. I can kneel, sit and even sleep on it. It is therefore possible to change positions in between. And if that's not enough for me, I can go to my hanging chair in the cozy reading corner.

There is also a bookshelf with all my creative books. ... Thanks for the tip about using the shelf as a room divider. I did that and it looks so much better. Now I have, so to speak, a smaller "work or creativity part" and a large part for relaxing. It's almost like having my own living room, or a small apartment ;-)

My husband loves this hanging chair and often comes to visit me just for that reason. Every evening we have a nice chat. I'm a kinestatic learner and can concentrate better when swinging. If I want, I can also turn around and see over the fields... as you said in one of your videos, this is important for more creativity :-).

Then there is the couch or the bed. I can sleep there or just chill during the day. In addition to being decorative, the large chest is primarily used to store the bedding.

Since I don't have any pictures of my own yet, I've hung up my Bible texts in the meantime. I love these chalkboards and have them all over the house. There are also some real plants :-).

So these are the pictures of my room before and after.

It was our bedroom and I turned into a room for me...

We started tearing out and enlarging the windows. Then a wooden floor came in because the old one just wasn't "hygge" enough.

P.S. Sorry, my old fotos were all deleted, and I don't have the time to look for them again... I've been sitting here for two hours because that doesn't work and this is the third time I've been doing this again.
