Rainy Night

Rainy Night - student project

The great rasin had fallen throughout the dark night leaving the streets wet and shimmering like glass. The traffic lights  flashed and danced like strobe lights off the wet glass covered streets. Keeping the beat of the street lights ahead of them. The air was fresh and clear and there was a smell of pine and a distant smell of firewood in the air. Making the air crisp and clean. As dor the cars parked on either side of the street. They stood like wet quiet sentries lined up  in a row  one behind the other guarding and taking up most of the spaces on the street and waiting for their owners in the pubs and bars to scurry them away into the night to some  dark destination before dawn. As for the pavement its sandy, concrete was covered with puddles of water left by the rains runoff and the dampness of the rain. This made for a splashing sound as people walked down the street trying to avoid the large puddles of water in their path. Somewhere in the distance soft music could be heard playing from either a radio from an  opened window or from one of the bars as a door opened and closed. This helped to settle the night's atmosphere into a gently quiet and lullaby evening.

So it was for Tyra  as he quietly made his way home from working the night shift at the hospital. She just got off the bus at Canal Street and was making her way up Lancaster Street to her house.  Usually she would stop in for a night cap at the local bar and talk to her friends but tonight she was too tired for that. This last shift had really knocked her out and every part of her cried out for rest and sleep. All she wanted right now was her bed. She was happy for one thing tomorrow was her off day and she could spend all day in her bed. Infact she was off for the next few days after swapping shifts with one of her friends. Walking home dressed in her street clothes of blue jeans, a white cotton blouse with a light grey sweater and grey over coat. She carried her unbrella, a long brow handle with a printed flowery cover. Her purse strung over her shoulder along with her work bag. A blarge tweed bag with a long shoulder strapover the opposite shoulder. Her phone in her side pocket along with her house keys. Her hat a simple black hat to cover her head from the rain. To complete the ensemble she wore her white and black trimmed sneakers that made skidmsounds as she walked andher feet kept a slow pace rthym  with the rain drops that fell from the yawning rooftops of the buidings she passed. Stopping for only a moment she pired into thw window of a pub which had its yellow and soft red light on. She could see groups of people standing around the bar talking, laughing  and sharing stories over their drinks. She could also see other people behind the bar sitting at tables also sharing stories probably about their day and other issues.

Oh how she wanted to be in there but she was way too tired to drink and share stories. So she turned and continued on home. Maybe tomorrow she'll think about it. Twenty minutes later she reached her place. Took her key and opened the front door and switched on the front light. She entered and closed and locked the door behind her. Knowing she wan't expecting anyone to drop by or call. She then disrobed and hung her coat in the closet. Removed her hat and shoes and slipped into her slippers which were waiting for her at the door. She then turned off the light and locked the inner door. She then proceeded to the bathroom and washed her hands. After drying them she mmade her way to the kitchen. Her slippers making asliding  soundon the tile floor as she opened her fridge and took a small ham sandwich she made for herself in the morning. She then poured a small glass of milk and closed the fridge door. She then made her way upstairs to her room where she placed the plate and glass on her night stand. She then  undressed and chaged into her long night blue flannel night gown. She then laid down on her bed and remotely turned on her tv not to watch it but to listen to as she ate.  Finishing her small meal she turned off her tv, turned on her side in her queensized bed and facing her window in the darkness of her room drifted off to some much neede sleep as the moon in all of itheavenly glow  seemed to shine brightly through her window as she drifted off to dreamland.
