Puffins

Puffins - image 1 - student project

What a perfect way to spend a rainy day, painting Puffins - my 2nd Puffin project in as many months. I tried some salt in the back bird with some success, and questionable success in the rocks. I used most of the same colours as Jane suggested, except I substituted Daniel Smith Mayon Orange and Winsor Newston Winsor Yellow for the red and yellow. I love the granulation of the Sodalite Genuine, although I didn't get as much granulation in the wing of the front bird as Jane's piece. Jane please set me straight, maybe a little more water from the outset may have helped achieve a more striking granulation? By the time I got to the feet I found myself getting lazy and reckless, but let's not worry about that! I didn't particularly like the shadow under the beak of the front puffin, so chose not to paint it. The expression in the eyes of the front puffin makes me grin, looks like he's totally bored with posing for this and sighing ho hum!! On the whole I think they're a cute pair, and I'm really happy with the result. Thank you Jane for another great tutorial as always.
