Pottery Plate Thrown and Trimmed on the Wheel

Pottery Plate Thrown and Trimmed on the Wheel - student project

Plates are so fun to throw on the wheel. They're definitely more challenging than bowls at first. But once you get the process down they are actually easier because they don't defy gravity like bowls and vases do.

The biggest challenge with plates is getting the curve of the bottom to look good and drying them right so they don't crack or warp. Tip: As soon as the rim is leather hard, re-cut the plate off the bat and flip it upside down to dry. And dry it SLOWLY by covering it loosely with plastic for a few weeks.
