Freelance Illustration: Develop Your Portfolio And Find Your First Clients

Hi Poan, great to be introduced to your work! There's a lot to like here! Some great composition and conceptual ideas. It seems as though you are drawn to quite serious subjects often (loneliness, depression, covid etc) which is always going to be needed for news outlets but I would be interested to see some more positive themes. (discoveries, achievements, collaboration, whatever). i thin it will add another dynamic to your portfolio. The way you draw faces is quite unique. It works very well for most of your images, but I think the lines age your characters quite a lot. How would you adapt it for children, or young, happy people?

I enjoyed this a lot, Poan. Funny and imaginative. I could see it working as an editorial illustration for an article about the struggles of work-from-home, or about the tension between print and traditional media. It’s definitely in absurd/ surreal territory; more literal-minded clients might not “get it.” Your written statement sounds a bit like the statement of a gallery/fine artist, and might be a little wordier and more abstract than necessary for an illustrator, though I’d love to hear what our instructor thinks! Great work.
