Realistic Pastel Drawing for Beginners

Amazing job, Katherine! Especially for your first time using pastels. You’re right…they are messy and finding those tiny corners that can be difficult if your pastels are worn down. But you would never know  it looking at your pear. It’s absolutely stunning. Your attention to all the different types of shadows, and blended edges and soft edges shows a command of the material. Your layering is beautiful and presents a very finished piece. The only very minor suggestions I have are to darken your occlusion shadow (very small, pretty absolutely black area where the pear is directly touching the red cloth). This will make it feel slightly more anchored on the surface. Also, in the top left area of the bright red you could bring that red solidly up to the edge of the pear. There seems to be a little bit of paper showing through in that small corner. Otherwise, I don’t have any suggestions for you. It’s absolutely gorgeous!  Thank you so much for taking my class and I hope you continue drawing!

Thank you Diana. I kept getting my hands covered by accidently touching the paper. I used a sanded paper  which helped with the texture so much.  You are right about the small areas.  Some of the pastels I used were square which helped with the small areas.  I will have to figure out what to so when the edges wear down. The hand rolled ones would be impossible. Thank you for always being so supportive. I  hope you are having a lovely day :)

Wow, first time using the pastels, you did an amazing job Katherine! The lighting and texture is really good. Your stem is so impressive, I find the pastels so big it makes it difficult getting transitions in small areas. P.S. I make a mess with I use soft pastels too! :):):)

This is my 1st time using soft pastels. This was fun. I think maybe the artist used hard pastels because I made a mess :)
