Painting outdoors, part 3 - how do you come back from failure - vlog (Class 4)

After my last failed painting session, I return to the beach once more to find out whether the third time really is a charm. The scenery is breath-taking and maybe the hardest part is actually choosing what to paint. But when your subject is so stunningly beautiful, how do you do it justice? Ultimately I think you might be surprised by my subject choice. Can I make it work this time?
In this video I grapple with issues of: how to reduce an expansive 3 dimensional landscape to a small 2 dimensional drawing, how to work with acrylics in layers when you've got limited time, and working with constantly changing light. I'm also using the most limited colour palette I've used so far in this series. My colour palette is restricted to: titanium white, prussian blue, red ochre, yellow ochre, raw umbre, and later I add cobalt blue.
I've been inspired by the Tonalist painters for this video series, notably the Australian plein air painter, Clarice Beckett. In her paintings she focused on tone, colour and composition, in that order. The series is a lesson in how to learn from the work of the Master Artists that inspire you, and how to make their methods your own.
